How to Evaluate a Web Design Agency's Portfolio (Beyond Aesthetics)

When looking for a web design agency in South Africa, the first thing every business owner does is look at their portfolio. If the screenshots look beautiful, they sign the contract.

This is a massive mistake. In modern web development, aesthetics are only 20% of the equation. A website that looks gorgeous but takes 12 seconds to load and is invisible to Google is a liability, not an asset. Here is how you should actually evaluate an agency's past work.

1. The PageSpeed Test

Don't just look at the JPEG screenshots in the agency's PDF proposal. Find a live link to one of the websites they have built.

Go to Google PageSpeed Insights (it's free) and paste that client's URL into the search bar. Look specifically at the "Mobile" score. If the website scores in the red (below 50), it means the agency relies on bloated WordPress builders (like Elementor or Divi) instead of writing clean code.

A slow website will be heavily penalized by Google's Core Web Vitals update, destroying your SEO before you even begin.

2. The "Mobile-First" Check

Over 90% of South African internet traffic is mobile. Open the agency's client portfolio on your smartphone.

  • Does the text scale properly, or do you have to pinch-to-zoom to read it?
  • Are the buttons large enough to tap with a thumb without hitting the wrong link?
  • Does the mobile navigation menu open smoothly, or does it lag and stutter?

If the mobile experience feels clunky, it means the agency designs for desktop first and treats mobile as an afterthought. This is a fatal flaw in 2026.

3. The SEO Foundation (Check the Source)

You don't need to be an engineer to check if an agency understands Technical SEO. Go to one of their client's websites on a desktop browser.

Right-click anywhere on the page and select "View Page Source." Press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F) and search for the following terms:

  • <title>: Is there a clear, descriptive title tag, or does it just say "Home"?
  • <h1>: Is there exactly one H1 tag on the page? If there are multiple, or none, their HTML structure is broken.
  • schema.org: If you search for "schema.org" and find zero results, the agency does not know how to inject structured data (JSON-LD), which is critical for local SA search rankings.

4. Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)

A beautiful website that doesn't generate leads is just digital art. Look at the agency's portfolio from a buyer's perspective.

Is there a clear Call-To-Action (CTA) in the top right corner of the navigation? Does the hero section clearly state what the company does within 3 seconds? Are the contact forms easy to use, or do they demand 15 different fields of information? If their past work looks like a confusing maze, your website will be a maze too.

Frequently Asked Questions

A beautiful website built with heavy, unoptimized code (massive images, bloated JavaScript) will take 10 seconds to load on a mobile phone. Users will abandon it before they ever see the beautiful design, and Google will refuse to rank it due to poor Core Web Vitals.

Find a live link to a client site in their portfolio. Run that URL through Google PageSpeed Insights. If it scores below 50 on mobile, that agency relies on bloated templates and does not write clean code. You can also run it through free SEO checkers to see if basic tags are missing.
